Driving Sustainable Progress

At NHIT, sustainability is at the core of our vision for growth and excellence. We are dedicated to ethical practices and continuous improvement, integrating sustainability into every facet of our operations. By prioritizing quality, safety, and governance, we aim to create a positive impact on people, the planet, and profits. Together, we rise towards a future that embodies responsibility and progress.

Environment Highlights

NHIT champions sustainability, safety, and community well-being through continuous improvement. We minimizeour carbon footprint while prioritizing the welfare of stakeholders and the environment.

ESG risk management

We assess Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) risks at every stage of a project, from pre-acquisition to post-acquisition. This includes detailed risk mapping based on national and international standards, leading to a strong Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) and an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS). The ESMS ensures legal compliance, resource efficiency, workplace safety, community impact management, and the reduction of negative environmental and social effects.

Monitor, Measure & Reduce – GHG Emissions

A significant portion of our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions comes from fuel use for primary and supporting operations, as well as electricity consumption for toll plazas, site offices, and highway lighting.

Highlights – H1 FY25

  • 37% of Scope 1 emissions: Diesel and petrol use in DG sets and administrative vehicles, contributing 429 tons of CO₂ equivalent.
  • 63% of Scope 2 emissions: Electricity consumption for toll plaza operations and highway lighting, contributing 1146 tons of CO₂ equivalent.

Monitor, Measure & Reduce – Energy

We are committed to transitioning to renewable energy by installing solar power plants at toll plazas with net metering to optimize energy use. Additionally, we are exploring opportunities to expand our renewable energy capacity.

Highlights – H1 FY25

  • Total energy consumed: 1080 MWh
  • Captive renewable energy consumed: 19 MWh, reducing 15 tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions.

Monitor, Measure & Reduce – Energy efficiency

Highway lighting constitutes a significant share of electrical energy consumption in our assets, contributing to Scope 2 GHG emissions. To enhance energy efficiency, we are replacing energy-intensive High-Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) luminaires with energy-efficient LED luminaires across 635 kilometers of project highways.

Resource Conservation

Water Conservation: We prioritize responsible water management by implementing conservation measures such as rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation.

Highlights – H1 FY25

  • Water consumed: 0.013 million cubic meters
  • Rainwater harvesting chambers constructed: 379

Biodiversity Conservation & Habitat Restoration

A total of 16,211 avenue plantations were planted across our project sites, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Note – Plants counts are cumulative figures from inception till November’2024

Resource Conservation / Circularity

A significant saving of 376 metric tons of bitumen was achieved by utilizing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) works, resulting in the avoidance of 185 tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions.

Road User Convenience

Setting a new standard for hygiene, enhanced user experience and improved roadside infrastructure, the initiative addresses one of the key challenges faced by women travellers on Indian highways by providing a smart powder room, designed specifically for their needs.7 Nos. Women only Powder room installed at toll plaza premises for providing personalized private space for women on the move.

Social Highlights

Over 10 million safe manhours achieved since the commencement of projects (SPV Staff and Workmen + Contractor (IIW, RRM and Major Repair works).

Occupational Health and Safety

We continuously evaluate and enhance measures to ensure the well-being of our workforce and stakeholders. The key focus areas of our operations include Work on Live roads, Toll Operations, and Incident Management & Route Patrolling.

Road Users’ Safety

Our unwavering dedication to road safety underscores our commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring safe travel experiences on our roads. Through our collective efforts and interventions, we have successfully reduced Road User Fatal accidents by 27% year-on-year (FY 23 & 24) across Round 1 projects including Chhitorgarh-Kota, Belgaum-Kagal, Kothakota – Kurnool, and Palanpur-Aburoad-Swaropganj, demonstrating the substantial impact of our commitment to Road Safety.
